Hi, I hope your new year has taken off to a good start. My good news for 2010 has been that I have been given a new 6 month contract to keep on my studio at Model House! From here I will be continuing my sewing and jewellery classes and writing my two new books. My lampwork book is really starting to take shape and the projects contributed by the talented artists that I’m working with are absolutely stunning. Lesley Rands has proved to be a brilliant support and her technical step by steps for the ‘Know How’ section are exceptional. I consider myself very fortunate to be working with such a focused and artistic woman. I hope that in Spring 2011 you’ll see my book and go ‘WOW! I want to get into the flame and melt some glass’. The book will be visually beautiful, inspiring as well as practical.

For anyone wanting a taster lesson in precious metal clay I am running a class in my studio, [Model House, Llantrisant Wales]
on the 22nd and 23 rd of Feb. Please give me a call or email me as spaces are limited. Phone: 0754 225753

Cheers Joan

I’m starting the new year with a view to getting back into my jewelley and sewing classes. I’ll be available for classes starting the 25th of January. This year I am exploring glass fushion and decorating the glass with fine silver clay. Basic Jewellery classes, wirework and fine silver are all still on offer as is general sewing and machine embroidery techniques. My current new venture of working with glass and fine silver is really exciting. The proto types are just out of the kiln and I am very pleased with the results. My other focus this year is to travel and see more of the UK and Europe. I will be visiting jewellery makers and galleries throughout with view of expanding my skills and perhaps writing another book. My current lampwork book, is well on it’s way and I am so greatful for all the help I am being given by the talented lampwork artists who are contributing to the techniques and projects. Here’s to a creative 2010.

Warm regards, Joan

It’s been awhile since I’ve been into my site. I’ve been busy working on my next issue of Making Jewellery. It’s hard to believe that it’s just over a year since I first commenced developing and then editing. I was hoping to have had a little more free time to teach but with the magazine and the new book that I’ve just commenced authoring – Masters of Glass – (the book is focused on lampwork bead techniques and step by step projects will be contributed by some leading UK and international artists), I’ve been strapped for time. Having said that I’ve had some time to make some jewellery and I’ve been enjoying melting glass and then encasing it in PMC fine silver. The finished pieces are free form and the most interesting thing to note is that the clear glass that I melt at the torch, turns pink or yellow when it’s refired with the silver. This fuming effect is very pretty and I’m pleased with the results. If you’d like to learn more about this process or if you’re keen to learn how to link beads to make unusual and bespoke jewellery, give me a call a drop me an email. Over the next couple of months I will be working more often in my studio in Wales and I am offering 1 to 1 or small group classes. Cheers Joan

Hi there, welcome to my website. It’s been a long time coming due to my commitments to both the magazine and my latest sewing book. Being an editor sounds exciting to most people but the truth is it’s a lot of hard work. If you haven’t seen my latest magazine please visit www.makingjewellery.com. At this website you can view several pages of the mag and also join our forum members. I’m really proud of what we have created and the magazine is going from strength to strength.

The pic attached to this blog was taken recently when I visited the Swarovski Head Office in Watten Austria. I was over there for a press launch and will be writing about it in my next issue of Making Jewellery.

On another note: For those looking for a creative escape why not visit me Llantrisant and enjoy a workshop? I can offer comfortable and inexpensive B&B accommodation in my cottage for a single person or couple. If you are looking for a motel you can stay just down the road from Model House in the new Premier Inn. Of course if you’re looking for a total luxury weekend there are some beautiful hotels in the vicinity, stunning golf courses, spa retreats etc to enjoy.

In October I’m offering [in conjunction with several other artists and designers], a Make & Take Creative Weekend in my studio at the Model House. The dates we’ve agreed on are the 3rd -4th of October. Visitors will be invited to book into 2 – one day workshops. You could for example experience a 1 day lampwork course with a recognized UK glass artist and on the second day learn how to make fine silver earrings with me. We will be offering a wine and cheese evening for the Meet and Greet on Friday night, so you can get to know your fellow visitors and tutors and on the Saturday night we’ll be providing further entertainment. It will be a fantastic opportunity for folk to learn new skills, make bespoke gifts for Christmas, enjoy the opportunity to shop for quality handmade jewellery and gifts and generally relax and have a fun weekend.

Please email me if you want any more details.

Must get back to work, but please do stay in touch.

Regards - Joan
